By February 17, 2009 all broadcasters are required to convert their programming to digital television programming thus analog signals will completely be gone. This is a great idea, considering that our televisions are not getting better and better, but some low-tech televisions would need to have some upgrading in order to enjoy this new technology. These equipments are just easy to install to analog televisions. You just need to purchase a converter box that would then convert the digital broadcasting signal to a format that your low-tech television could display. But, of course, if you could afford to buy a digital television then you’d get to enjoy viewing digitalized channels even more.

Don’t be confused about DTV and HDTV as both don’t necessarily mean the same thing. HDTVs can display digital broadcasting but DTVs can’t display the highest quality of the digital broadcasting that only the HDTV could.

Lenovo has announced their two latest desktop computers, the IdeaCentre K220 and the IdeaCentre K230.

The IdeaCentre will have a base price under $500 and will come standard with Intel CPUs and DDR RAM. Upgrade options available include a Core 2 Quad processors, Blu-Ray players, 64-bit Vista OS and various hard drive, memory and video card configurations.

The K220 includes two unique features that work with an optional webcam. The first is a handy security system designed by Veriface that utilizes facial recognition to authenticate valid users. The second feature is BrightVision, which again using the webcam, assesses room lighting levels and then adjusts the display brightness to an optimal setting.

Mozilla has officially made history with a new Guinness world record for the largest number of software downloads in a 24-hour period. The final record breaking 8,002,530 downloads for Firefox 3.0 took place in June with parties in over 25 countries. “The enthusiasm and creativity of Firefox fans was key to making this happen” said Marketing head Paul Kim. Gareth Deaves of Guinness World Records called it “an extremely impressive accomplishment”. One of the items would have to be Kodak's OLED-driven, wireless photo frame that currently retails for a staggering $999.

Whilst not disarming with respect to aesthetics, the 7.6in screen features an 800x480 (16:9) panel. Nothing really surprising about that. The magic is with the OLED technology that delivers a pin-sharp picture and perfect viewing angle that would put any LED-based display to shame.

The picture, above, doesn't do it a shred of justice; you have to up close and personal to see the vivid the colours appear, to the extent that it's almost painful to look at for extended periods.

Kodak reckons the screen has a 36,000:1 contrast ratio and it's easy to believe for once.

Adding to the bling factor are bezel-mounted buttons that aren't immediately obvious. Touch the bezel and the frame lights up.

For what it's worth, the OLED frame has a 2GB internal memory and wireless ability to pull pictures from a PC or to access content online from sites such as Flickr and the FrameChannel.

For the past three years, every CES show has dangled the promise of wireless charging products. But we haven't seen these power chargers become widely available.

This year Powermat says it is closer than ever to the finish line. At CES 2009, the company announced a line of products for home, travel and work use that could charge from three to four devices on a single mat. The Powermat can charge iPods, iPhone, other mobile phones and even a laptop.

Powermat uses the principle of magnetic induction to deliver wireless power. Users plug in their Powermat to an electrical outlet and can then place their devices on the mat to charge--which means there are two parts to the system, the mat and the magnetic cases/docks that are attached behind each device.

In its true sense the Powermats aren't completely wireless since the device just goes on a mat that is plugged in. Think of it as a better-looking Power Squid. But when Powermat's technology is built into kitchen countertops and walls, it could potentially be more true to its name.

The mats in white and black finish are priced at $100 and the cases/docks for each individual device will cost $30.

Last night at the ShowStoppers event, the Gadgetell crew was frantically running around looking for something unique to highlight, and it seems that something instead found us, which came courtesy of an very enthusiastic booth representative. The product is called the Pogoplug and it allows the user to hook up an external hard drive via a USB connection and then be able to access that content from anywhere you may be.

While I have not set this up myself, judging from what we were told, it is very simple to get up and running. Simply plug the device into the wall, plug in an Ethernet cable and external USB drive and you are all set. After than the data is accessable through Windows Explorer or the Mac Finder. Honestly, I cannot wait to get some hands-on time because it almost sounds like it is to easy.

Additionally, the Pogoplug is compatible with both a Mac or PC, and can use Firefox, Chrome, Safari, IE and Opera. They also have an iPhone app that is available in the App Store. Though nothing was mentioned as to when we can expect this, they did mention that some backup, priniting and file syncronizarion options were coming.

The Pogoplug is currently available online, and is selling (as a preorder special) for $79. No mention on how long the preorder special is valid until, however after that time the price is going to go up, but not by very much.

Hasselblad is known for making some high-end photography equipment and it appears that they are not going to disappoint today with the introduction of the 50-megapixel H3DII-50 camera. The Fujifilm FinePix Z200fd is a 10-megapixel shooter which is fairly thin in body size. It sports a 2.7-inch display and offers up to 1600 ISO. It also sports Fujifilm’s face detection technology, making it capable of monitoring up to 10 faces at the same time.

LG reveals GD910 Watch Phone to be released this year

We've just got more details about the watch phone. It has tempered glass, a high-quality metal casing, and is around 13.9mm thick. The touch screen itself is 1.43 inches diagonally, and features LG's Flash interface. Features include voice recognition, Text to Speech so it can read out text messages, and stereo Bluetooth. However, the huge disappointment is that the watch phone will be Europe-only (insert sad face here). We think it may still be compatible with local GSM networks, but only time will tell (apologies for the bad pun).

UPDATE: More updates on the Watch Phone. LG has just told us that the Watch Phone will have quad-band GSM, and that the 3G/HSDPA will be compatible with AT&T's frequency. So even if it is Europe-only, you could potentially get one unlocked and use it here. We'll see if we can get more news about pricing and availability.

Sony Unwraps Two New Media Players

Sony unleashed two new model Walkmans Sony's new Walkman X-Series sports a 3.5-inch OLED touchscreen display and includes WiFi for downloading podcasts, streaming video from YouTube, and more. The X Series will be available early this summer in 16 GB and 32 GB capacities, with pricing yet to be determined.

Available in April, Sony's Walkman W Series features a cord-free design integrating the music player into the headset--a design meant to be lightweight and comfortable. The W series can fully charge its estimated 12-hour battery in only 30 minutes, while most other audio players take a few hours to recharge. The W Series wil be available in April with support for protected and unprotected WMA, as well as unprotected MP3 and AAC formats.

While at the Sony booth, I had a brief hands-on with The Walkman W Series. It uses a control mechanism that Sony calls "ZAPPIN," a small job wheel located on the under-side of the right earbud. Turn the knob forward to skip to the next song, flip it back to play the previous song, and click it to play or pause your music. I like the idea of a music player integrated into the headphones; it seems like an obvious evolution, and joggers will be pleased. The only obvious downsides I saw in my brief hands-on in the Sony booth was the fact that the volume rocker and ZAPPIN jogwheel are close together and about the same size, so they may be easy to confuse.

Next-Gen Wifi: 802.11n

What everyone now calls Wi-Fi is based on a technical standard called IEEE 802.11b, which in 1999 defined how a wireless network would operate so all devices on it could actually communicate. The 802.11b standard supported connections speeds of up to 11Mbps, though typical connections run at 1Mbps. Then came 802.11g

in 2003, a faster version of 802.11b that boosted speeds to a maximum of 54Mbps (2Mbps to 5Mbps is a more typical range of actual connection speeds) while also letting 802.11b devices work at their old speeds on the same network.
802.11n: The Faster Future

But because nothing is ever fast enough, the IEEE — the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a standards body — has been working for several years on something even faster: 802.11n, which could run as fast as 540Mbps, with typical connection speeds of 100Mbps or more. The final 802.11n specification is expected in mid-2007, with products in 2008.

To achieve these projected speeds, 802.11n devices will use more of the radio spectrum than 802.11b/g devices do, and would actually use multiple channels (in a technique called MIMO) simultaneously. This could make it harder to have multiple networks overlapping in the same area, but it would also make wireless networking as fast as wired networking.

The 802.11n proposal would continue to let 802.11b/g devices run over it, for backward compatibility. And it would also let 802.11a devices — these run at the same speed of 802.11g but use a different, less crowded part of the radio spectrum — run over it. That means that 802.11n devices could use both the 2.4GHz spectrum of 802.11b/g and the 5GHz spectrum of 802.11a, giving it a potential way to avoid interference with other networks in the crowded 2.4GHz space.
The 802.11n proposal would also double the range of a wireless network from today’s typical 100 to 300 feet. Some vendors suggest that the range could be four times today’s typical range under ideal circumstances (flat areas with no walls or other objects in the way).
Jumping the Gun

But wait. There are already “n” products on the market labeled “pre-N” or “draft N.” How can that be?
Manufacturers of wireless devices have a long history of jumping the gun when it comes to new standards. Even before the 802.11b standard was finalized, some vendors — mainly those selling to the consumer market, rather than to the standards-conscious enterprise market — were selling “draft b” products using early drafts of the standards, a gamble meant to attract customers before the competitors got them. If the standard changed during the approval process, the vendors would typically have a software update for their devices to make them compatible, though sometimes this update strategy fell short, leaving customers with an incompatible device.

Many vendors did the same “draft” approach again before the 802.11g standard was finalized. And now they’re doing it with 802.11n.

The difference now: The 802.11n standard has taken much longer to ratify than expected, so some “draft n” products will have been available for two years before the actual standard is completed, making compatibility an open question.

This proliferation of “draft” products carries two risks. One is that the equipment bought today will not be fully compatible with the final 802.11n standard. The other is that “draft” products typically work only with “draft” products from the same vendor, so you can’t mix and match products from multiple vendors based on price or availability. (However, if these “draft” products promise compatibility with standard 802.11b/g devices, you can use other vendors’ 802.11b/g products with the “draft” product.)

Until the final 802.11n standard is approved and products are designed from it, anything you buy today carries one of those risks. When the standard is approved, you’ll see a flood of products available that can confidently deliver on the 802.11n promise.
